"A House of Their Own"

In 1950's Los Angeles single mom Kathy Bates gets sexually harassed at the potato chip factory where she works. When she retaliates she is fired. So she packs her six kids ("the Lacey Tribe") into her broken down jalopy and heads to rural Idaho in search of a house. When they spy a ramshackle tumbling down shack they convince the Japanese-American neighbor/owner to sell it to them for bartered labor and other services. Over time they fix up the house and barter and trade for furniture and indoor plumbing. When tragedy strikes neighbors and friends pitch in to help. Though the film is a bit soapy and predictable it is a far more successful effort than the similarly themed "Life as a House", which is much more cynical.
Worth a look.
