I too was not frightened, perhaps because I was an adult, plus I was
stoned at the time; got a big laugh when Regan's head did a 360! I do
believe I woulda been scared witless if I had been a child, however. There
were startling, even shocking moments, but not frightening in the Exorcist.
Read the Blatty novel too, which was also good. The movie was voted scariest of all horror movies in a recent British poll.
Incidentally in the same theater around the same time period, I saw
"Friday the 13th, 3-D";got a big laugh from the 3-d effects, especially
when Jason squeezed a dude's head and his eyeballs popped out of his
head AND out from the screen into the theater!
