Alien and Toshiba 3108 Problem

I just received the "Alien Legacy" DVD collector's set and to my dismay, find that the 1st DVD in the series "Alien" won't play on my Toshiba 3108 DVD player. Feedback from many others on the www indicate this DVD plays on other brands of DVD players, just NOT the Toshiba 3108.
Here are the following failure symptoms:
1) Turn on player, open DVD drawer and insert "Alien" DVD correct side up (tried both sides just for completeness)
2) Close drawer and watch the letters "Loa" slowly appear from
the right hand edge of DVD display screen one letter at a time moving to
the left until they stop in the center.
3) Wait for approximately 30-60 seconds or more and the DVD display
screen goes blank, then repeats the sequence in item#2 above.
4) Nothing really happens when I push any of the remote buttons (except
for the beep to let me know I've pressed a button). I can get the
DVD drawer from the remote.
5) Nothing is being displayed on the TV screen at all during this whole time.
6) If I insert another DVD, everything works just fine, and I can enjoy good video and audio.
I have sent this message to Toshiba customer support by email today.
Anybody with a 3108 that works with the "Alien" DVD please provide your date of manufacture for reference.
