"Gloomy Sunday"

This effective melodrama involves a familiar plot, three men in love with the same woman. One of them is a pianist/composer who writes the melody and later the lyrics to "Gloomy Sunday" a hit in the 1930's in Austria (where the film takes place) and, later, the rest of Europe and, still later, the United States, aprticularly after Billie Holiday's 1941 version. Dubbed the "suicide" song because of the many suicides associated with hearing it, it was later banned by the BBC. The story here involves originally the triangle between the Jewish restaurant owner and his piano player and the beautiful waitress they both love and, eventually, share. along comes an obsessive German who also admits his love and offers marriage, a proposal the girl refuses. As World War II approaches, the Nazis arrive and (what a conicidence) who is a top SS officer but the German, who in his post war ambitions selects Jews to be spared the camps for money and future favors, among them the reataurant owner until...

The story is told in flashback, and the opening secene isn't fully revealed until the end. The song is played throughout the film and is truly haunting. again, melodrama but highly recommended.
