"Monday Morning": Ottar meets Hou

Another masterpiece of nothing. We meet and follow Vincent in his colloquial existence in a small French village: a humdrum life, wife, job, children, parents. No glossy Parisian backgrounds here just real life. By chance, Vincent is locked out of his job one morning and decides to visit his father who encourages him to take a journey beginning with Venice. This leads to a wonderful travelogue of "real" Venice and not San Marco. Eventually, Vincent straggles home and his humdrum life picks up as if he never left.

The charm of this film is that it focuses on the mundane. The pace often seems glacial but in reality it isn't. The stage direction, at times, is absolutely brilliant in the way one scene is handed off to another. Often there is no subtitling because it isn't really necessary as words aren't that important. To me it's a European version of Hsiao-hsien Hou work.

Recommended.
