2006: One of the greatest years for movies in recent memory!?

I mean, let's be honest. Year after year almost everyone denigrates the new movies, right? But this past year produced a gratifying number of highly watchable films (albeit not each one for everyone's taste).

My list appears in two sections, those I've seen myself and those for which there was critical (or Academy -- which is different) attention. Between the two I assert there are maybe twice as many good films as in many, many previous years.

In no order of preference (and I'm sure I've forgotten some):

I.

Children of Men
The Lives of Others
Half Nelson
Apocalypto
Tristram Shandy
Blood Diamond
The Departed
Casino Royale
Cars
The Illusionist
A Scanner Darkly
Thank You for Smoking
Superman Returns

II.

Babble
A Convenient Untruth
(OK, OK...)
Borat
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima
United 93
Water
The Last King of Scotland
Little Miss Sunshine
Notes on a Scandal
The Queen
A Prairie Home Companion
X-Men: The Last Stand
Pan's Labyrinth
The Devil Wears Prada
Volver
Dreamgirls (just not for me...)
