When was the last time you saw a good straight ahead drama? Here's a powerhouse of one. Another Danish gem filled with stellar performances wrapped up in 2 hours of well-paced, understated familial mystery that never falters.

An ensemble that includes multiple major characters for adults and children, including Mads Mikkelson in the best role I've seen from him. As well, there's an Oscar worthy performance from Rolf Lassgard.

Great locations, beautiful production, poetic camera work and a script that is as intelligent as any I've seen for this type.

But, it's the acting that carries the load. The phrase, "I laughed; I cried" has genuine application here.

Director Suzanne Bier is brilliantly ambiguous. She sets up just enough marks then steps back so the triangulation of story, actor and viewer can take place in a most natural way.

This is a 2007 film that I can't imagine showing in any but the most courageous theaters. A real treat. Just about as good as it gets.
