I think that was an intentional result of his approach to the part. The highly stylized portrayal of a such a character's evolving psychology over 30 years. All the major characters inhabited dramatic parody. All of them are brilliantly insane and brittle to various degrees. This is a very complex, obsessively crafted movie on every technical level.

To my eye both Gomarrah and Il Divo - especially the latter - brought something fresh and new to Italian film. They are culture laid bare, in a most personal and contemporary way. I was reminded of Rocha.

I've watched both multiple times and they still deliver an absolutely delicious and weighty experience. Both are a perfect conjunction of art and entertainment.

Steiger is a great favorite. His barely contained nerves-on-sleeve intensity fits in with the Italians well. I was unaware of that film/performance until a couple years ago.
