I don't use the term masterpiece lightly, but this is Scorsese's best film in nearly 20 years. The most amazing thing about it is how personal Scorsese makes it for himself as well as the viewer. At least it was easy to make that personal connection for me. Hugo is partially an ode to filmmaking as an art form, and while other directors would have handled this material ostentatiously, Scorsese juggles the plot, the effects, the "filmmaking about filmmaking" elements and the child direction in a fresh way that makes it look effortless and unpretentious. Very well done. In fact, I can't imagine how it could have been done better. Most filmmakers would have failed with this story.
