Nuri Bilge Ceylan's film centers on grievous sin: killing; betrayal; and revenge.
A politician, at the very end of a political race, inadvertently runs down a pedestrian in a rural area. Panicking, he flees, but realizes he may be caught and bribes his chauffeur to take the fall, but for a considerable payoff. While in jail, an intrigue begins between the two families, with tragic results all around.
The tension in this film is all-but-unbearable; few filmmakers today possess the skills of Ceylan to depict psychological pressures and tortures: this is a fine film very deserving of all its awards.
Ceylan fans will recognize the sleazoid politician as the same excellent actor who portrayed the very earnest, humble, and soft-spoken village mayor in, "Anatolia." What a fine actor; one of many in this searing drama that also features the usual extraordinarily vivid and beautiful cinematography Ceylan's films feature.
HIHGLY recommended.
