Re: OK, Andrew T, here we go...

Hello Victor,

Hahaha-- This is great! Well, let's see:

' Attack the Gas Station', 'Chunhyang', 'Shiri', 'Memento Mori' are Korean films.
There is a recent renaissance in the industry there, and more and more high quality
films are popping up. For their action films, they're hiring a lot of HK fight choreographers
( e.g. Bichunmoo ) or co-productions ( 'Musa the Warrior' with the Beijing film co. ).
'Attack' is quite enjoyable, but in a slacker chic sorta way. 'Chunhyang' is a romance..
not bad but in likelihood nothing new for you. 'Memento Mori' is an interesting
drama/horror film..about schoolgirls. Not H'wood at all in the characterizations.
'Shiri' was the highest grossing film in Korea..just an interesting story, well told...
but maybe a bit too slick for your taste.

See if they have 'The Foul King'..simple comedy about a salaryman who takes up
WWF style wrestling to improve himself ( his manager puts him in a headlock
and humiliates him all the time ). Does the underdog win in this one? This is not H'wood.

'Flowers of Shanghai'..latest Hou Hsiao Hsien ( Taiwan ) flick. have you seen 'City of Sadness'?
Part of his oeuvre. I like his films.

'The Road Home '..from Zhang Yimou ( Raise The Red Lantern ) Cannes decided against having
his two latest films ( 'Road' and ' Not One Less ') compete because they ' weren't political and
critical of the government enough...take that as you will. The Chinese title says it all " My father,
my mother". If you haven't yet seen 'Ju Dou ' or his other films, then why not look for those instead.

Your wife does not want to watch 'Gemini Soseiji'.

There's that 'Gohatto'! Mellower Oshima, about a young samurai whose beauty causes much
problems within his troop.

'Shadow magic' I have the DVD for, but it's not here, so I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
I think it's from Mabel Cheung of HK.

'Time And Tide' is living proof that Tsui Hark has forgotten how to make movies that I care about.

'As Tears Go By' is that first WKW film I was talking about.

'Suzhou River' is part of the PRC New Wave filmmaking movement. Like WKW meets
Vertigo.

'The Duel (from the maker of Storm Riders)' ,' The Legend of the Flying Swordsman'...
only if you think the couch is too good for you.

'Horoscope II - the Woman from Hell'..sure, rent his one, Victor!

'Shogun Assassin', 'Zatoichi Meets Yo Jimbo'...well, do you like swordfighting, japanese style?

'Drunken Angel'..early Kurosawa. First appearance by Toshiro Mifune, if I'm not mistaken.

'After Life' .Japanese...interesting filmic take on purgatory. Asks the question, " if there was one memory
you could take with you for all eternity, what would it be?" .I think you may like this one.

'Young and Dangerous' part of a multi part Triad saga from Andrew 'Stormriders' Lau. I think you
have bigger fish to fry.

Now here's an interesting one: 'Mee Pok Man' Small film from Singapore..you'll get a taste of
how english is spoken there--they call it 'Singlish'. Small enjoyable film.

That's it for now..I have to work, I think. More later.

Regards,
A.
