In fact, it's my second favourite Bergman of all time (just behind Fanny and Alexander). It's hypnotically beautiful, like a drowsy fever dream on a languid summer's day. The funny thing is that it was marketed in the USA as a lurid B pic (there is a hilarious trailer on the Criterion edition).

IMHO Bergman didn't make another movie as good as Summer With Monika until the late 1950s when he made The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and The Virgin Spring.

There are very few movies that have the quality of Summer With Monika. Have you seen Sundays and Cybele? That comes close.
