Basically all VCRs are much lower quality than they used to be. SVHS is no exception. My impression is that most manufacturers are getting out of VCRs altogther and as a result it is getting harder to find SVHS machines. A check of the major TV companies websites will show you this is the case. You may want to look for a used machine.
