i'm getting close captioning on all my dvds... what's wrong??

i have a sony dvp-s550d dvd player. i haven't had any trouble for many years. but starting last night, it doesn't matter what disc i put in, but i am getting a close caption on the screen. dialog and sound effects (such as "car passes by") appear in text on the screen. i've looked through the onscreen menus on the sony, and can't seem to find where the setting is to turn this feature off. i'm not sure how it got turned on in the first place.
i'd appreciate any ideas/helpful insights into this.
