television - surround sound lacks volume and detail

64.12.96.77

bought another surround sound set up.

to add to the rca tv.

the tv has s-video but no composite jacks.

and a few other in's and outputs.

like normal pre hdtv stereo tv's

after hooking up the system.
it seems as though
the digital receiver has to be played at hi knob settings
to get some "wow" from the surround-sound.

i used a dvd set up disc
and the "test tone's"
play loud through the speakers during set up mode.

but when you play tv or dvd movies.

you have to crank it up to get the system to have detail and punch.

should i have to crank it to hear the set up,( i don't think so)?

my other home stuff does not need this much volume for detail.

i have thought about.
lower resistance rca cable type designs on the tv audio outs.
and maybe a line driver.
but am i over looking an obvious?

any suggestions?
thanks for help.
