downloading videos from the internet

sorry if this question don't belong to this forum,
but it's unclear to me where to ask it
AFAIK there are four kinds of internet videos:
mpg, avi, wmv and asf; i can see just mpgs
through quick time, but not the rest of them;
as i'm using a mac, does it mean that the rest
are to be seen only if you use a pc? if not,
i'll be grateful for directions about what to do
