I ahve both VCD recorder and DVD recorder in addition to CD & DVD burrners on computer. I find the VCD recorder nice for short segments under 80 minutes. For longer tapes DVD wins hands down.

I have a Panasonic E-30 and a HS-2 w/HD. Making a DVD from tpae direct via a VCD or DVD recorder is faster and easier. I only use the DVD computer burrner for making copies of DVDs I recorded with the E-30 or HS2. I took digital-8 video I shot at my daughters weddinb and put it all on DVD. YOu can record upto 6 hours on a std 4.7GB DVD-r via the Panasonics and I can make a digital DVD clone on computer in under an hour at 1x just using Nero. I wasted a lot of good money on software. DVD-r is more complatable and also cheaper than DVD+r. I get my dvd blanks for about $1.00 ea. for disk movers. The Panasonics DVD recorders are as easy to use as a VCR.
