An offer I can or can't refuse? .... regarding HT

141.150.14.113

I've recently assembled an HT system that sounds fairly decent: Harman Kardon AVR525 receiver; pair of Avance Epsilon 980 (Front L&R); pair of B&W 301 (Surrounds); B&W LCR600 S3 (Center).
No sub as of yet. I had 2 questions for inmates who are familiar with HT (I'm new to this):
On some broadcasts, I'm hearing (on both the Fronts and Surrounds) a garbled sound in the background (I need to put my ear up to the speaker to really hear it, but it's sort of like whan a radio is tuned to a station, but just shy of the mark. This does not happen on HBO or any DVD's that I've watched.
The other question regards the HT shutting down twice on me. It's 70 watts x 7 or 85 watts x 2. The first time is understandable (I think) as I was slamming it with an INXS CD pretty much at full tilt. The bass and drums on the track could cause it to run out of horsepower with the Avance speakers (which are 4 ohm - the rest of the speakers are 8 ohm). The 2nd time is more puzzling. A DVD of the movie Black Point w/ David Caruso shut the HK down somewhere in the middle. Does not make sense to me as the movie was not particularly loud at that point. I've played several concert DVD's (both in 5.1 and DTS, again at full tilt) and it has kept up right to the end (unlike my ears). Anyway, I'm trying to decide if:
A. I have a defective HK unit
B. I should take the HK back and try something else (at $670, it was a deal, I think)
C. Inmates can point me to a reasonable explanation
All replies welcome ..
