VHS to DVD

I'm sure this has come up before so can someone direct me to a link here that can provide information about recording my VHS tapes onto DVD? or perhaps just start me on the right track with some brief info here?
I don't have a DVD burner for my computer and don't really want one. i'd like to stick to connections with a vhs to dvd home recorder. i bought a machine a few months back (philips?) that had a dvd recorder and a VHS deck all in one unit but returned it because getting the volume correct was too difficult and there were other problems with the unit as well.
any suggestions or directions to appropriate links very appreciated.
