Dolby Digital Downmix Compression?

What is it? BTW, I'm using a Denon 3803 receiver with the Denon DVD-1600 DVD player. I'm quite happy with this setup and the total price didn't break the bank.

But what is "Dolby Digital Downmix Compression"? I have the option of turning this ON or OFF. It's OFF at the moment and it sounds just fine.
