That would be adjust it using the receiver tones then if you like go back with the DVD and measure. Virtually all receivers will have some kind of "on the fly" level management available via remote. If you make any changes go back in to the set up menu and adjust accordingly so you can keep the settings. Like other posters I have not really found a difference in settings between the receiver and external tones once I got beyond the budget receiver range.
