my best fix is not buy a sony next time. i love how sony gear performs when it works, but their quality has gone WAY down hill over the past 10 years.
i have a great sounding sony receiver that started doing pretty much the same thing (turning off on its own) and advanced to turning on on its own (at full blast and shifted over to the tuner... yes, white noise at full blast! real fun at 3am!) or not turning on for 5 minutes and numerous love taps. i ended up taking it apart, checking for cold solder joints, and what have you. same thing. finally took the face off and blew air through the switches... worked for a while, but then started acting up again.
had a great sounding sony cd player that all of a sudden decided not to track very well. it stopped tracking at all in 1997 after 4 1/2 years of service. grr...
had a really nice sony vcr that decided it no longer wanted to track tapes or rewind, then no longer do anything. this is when the new sony vhs vcrs cost $500 or more.
have a gorgeous sony hi8 camcorder that comes up with a little icon saying there's moisture in the transport... it won't let me do anything without sony service seeing it first. a paperweight.
i have since sworn off buying any new sony. all my older gear (luxman from 1982, akai from 1988, philips from 1993... sony from 1985) works just fine, but all my 1992 and later sony stuff died within 3-6 years. maybe this fits most people's replacement schedules, but not mine. sorry, sony, but i expect a bit more from my gear.
