Remote question from a non-HT guy

This is my first venture here, but I figured you are the folks to ask about this. Yesterday the remote for my 11-year-old 27" Panasonic semi-flat-screen TV started acting funny. It wouldn't work over about 4 or 5 feet away from the set. If it was really close, everything was fine. But I usually sit 8-10 feet away, so it was a real drag. The batteries were changed, but still it would only work up close. Today it's working some from normal range, but sometimes the buttons have to be pressed 2 or 3 times. Any thoughts?
The picture on the TV is still exceptional, so I'm not about to jettison it. Are there any sources for OEM remotes?
