Not sure there is an answer to your question because ....

... the flow of bass to various speakers depends upon -

1. Whether you are dealing with pro logic, AC3 (DD 5.1) or whatever

2. How your processor handles the bass.

If it is AC3 then having subs at the back would be useless as heavy bass is directed to your 5.1 sub. If it is in another format then the improvement would be minimal unless the processor has "small" & "large" settings for your rears. Even so, if you want better bass, IMO you are better off with another sub. We use two subs here and it gives much better coupling to the room. I did try subs at the rear once and the effect was wierd.
