dolby digital upgrades for a newbie

I recently aquired a hk avr80ii (in a garbage can!!!) I am very new to this home theater stuff. Are there still stand alone dolby digital processors out here or do I have to get an old one on ebay? What were the good ones? How far can I take my hk on updates Thankss
