Digital HDTV Cable Box Connection

For standard definition viewing, will I get a better picture by using the VHF/UHF coax connection on my Sony Wega or connecting the cable box to one of the TV video inputs using an s-video cable? Of course, for HDTV viewing, the box is linked to the TV with a component cable. Should I have both connections (component and s-video)hooked up at the same time and just switch between the 2 as the signal warrants? Instructions for both the box and TV assume only the component and coax connection of box to TV.
