Question about Native Rate

Is it important to match the scaler's output res to the native res. of my plasma? Say if my plasma has a low res of 852x450, (but capable of receiving 1080i/540p), and I'm sending 540p into it, am i just wasting my scaler's work, because the plasma's cheap built-in scaler is just gonna convert it back down to 852x450. Or is there still an advantage of using the outboard Faroudja NRS scaler? Or, should i use a diferent scaler, and if so, which one? Thanks.
