Depends on what you (They) want to spend...

I'm sure that for what they probably want out of the system you could use that Sony System that comes with speakers, the 725 DVD Player, and a receiver. BJs Wholesale Club has it for something like $400.

If you want to upgrade them in sound quality get a Sony Receiver and add some enty level Paradigm speakers (like the micro).

Keeping them in the same brand is a great idea.
