I am assuming you want to use the existing pre-amp because of its phono input and/or tone controls. I suggest purchasing a "pre-amp/processor", current models of which have all the codecs from Dolby and DTS plus more than likely some proprietary ones.
Then connect the existing pre-amp into an input on the new pre/pro and set the old pre-amp to a constant level. The new unit then becomes the control for the entire system.
