Hi!Congrats on your 5900 and introduction into multi-channel audio! It's amazing isn't it? Anyway, I would definitely suggest listening to the offerings by AIX Records for DVD-A's...they have a sampler that is a must! There are also nice lists compiled over on DVD Audiobahn (do a search for "Top 20") and Hi Rez Highway (search for "Top 10").
Anyway, I believe that you have actually found the best way to set-up your 5900...by playing around with it. Based on what you are posting, I can assume that you want to use the Analog Direct passthrough of your Audio Refinement Pre. Based on my internet search of this pre, I believe that this is your best option. The 5900 has newer DAC's and the processing may even be better (not sure) for bass management and time alignment. Also, I'm not sure about your speakers, i.e. Large/Small, distance, center yes/no, sub yes/no, but I would play with the 5900's settings. No matter the case, here are a few tips:
1.) Source Direct Off: Bass Management and Time Alignment can be adjusted.
2.) Distance in feet can only be changed in 1 foot increments. Changing the units to meters allows for adjustments in 0.1m (3.93 inch) increments.
3.) Using bass enhancer enables the sub output.
4.) Use the Test tones and adjust each channel using a sound level meter. Interestingly, 0dB is the default and each channel can only be changed in - 1dB increments. Keep this in mind when adjusting and incorporating your sub.
5.) Play with the crossovers based on your speaker sizes.Have fun and Happy Listening.
