Please recommend DVDP for picture quality

Hi all,
Could you please recommend a DVD player in the $500 - $1000 range, a player that would serve primarily to play DVDs. I am mostly interested in the picture and sound quality as they relate to movies. SACD and DVD-Audio aren't really necessary.
So, what's the best player in that price range for DVD only, without the other bells and whistles?
