depends on duration

There are many "gamers" that use plasmas for video games. Their advice is to take a break every once in a while (IE: don't play for hours on end with static image games). Switching to non-static images (regular TV, the news, etc) while you're taking a leak or getting something to eat keeps the risk down.

By the way, the black or gray bars don't cause the burn-in: it's the fact that these areas experience less useage compared to the active portion of the picture. What is actually occurring is uneven wear on the phosphors. The area with the least amount of use stands out.

A properly calibrated display (with at least Digital Video Essentials or Avia) mitigates much of the burn-in risk. Excessive Contrast levels are the greatest threat to plasmas and CRT displays.
