NEW TO HOME AUDIO - HELP!!

1) Have a budget of $500-600. Need to get a receiver & 4-6 surrounding speakers & subwoofer to create immersive audio. Online? Any good retail chains?
2) What's the best placement for the subwoofer? Some say put it in the back of the room, while others say to put it in the center of the room?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
