S video cable

I just picked up a Laserdisc player that has both composite and S video hookups. Assuming the S video to be a better option, I hooked it up using a rather long (10 feet) Radio Shack S vid cable. The pix quality is not very good. I am hoping that I can improve the quality by moving the LD player closer to the TV and using a shorter S vid cable.

Does visual quality with S video generally deteriorate over longer lengths? If so, and I decide to purchase a shorter S video cable - are there any brands/models that I should seek out? (One meter cable for under $50.)

TIA
