Bass with Denon AVR 3802 in two-channel mode

I notice that on the Denon AVR-3802, in stereo mode, (i.e. from a regular CD player), it does not make my friend's two front floorstanders "kick" like on my own system. (No sub connected, and fronts set to "large".)

I would have thought that an amp which says it's got 105Watts (RMS) per channel should be able to provide sufficient "grunt".

(My own Technics amp is only 90 Watt per channel, but its bass simply blows me away.)

Is my friend doing something wrong?
