from the owner's manual of the Panasonic TH-42PWD4 (december 2001):"Do not allow a still picture to be displayed for an extended period, as this can cause a permanent after-image to remain on the Plasma Display. Examples of still pictures include logos, video games, computer images, teletext and images displayed in 4:3 mode."
This is the latest generation of plasmas, and it has several technological inovations to overcome phospher "burn-out", but I'm only going to talk about the ones I understand. You can read about the others by searching the information posted on the website linked below.It will go at least 30000 hours continiously before phosphor burn-out begins to occur. Do the math: that's 8 hours a day, every day of the year, for over ten years. What do you think we will be watching in ten years (if you said I Love Lucy in black and white from the Kinoscope origionals you are correct)?
There is a screensaver function with variable timer built-in with the programs accessable from the remote.
There is an aspect control function preset to "Panasonic Auto" which automaticaly senses the type of signal you're inputting and re-scales the picture to full frame. This is a way-cool function, but it makes some 4:3 pictures look like they've been processed through the fun house (stretches the edges, or the top and bottom, or the middle, or none or all). Seriously, it can be very funny to watch "fat americans" like that Clairissa Flockheart or whatever her name is. Under the "FULL" function she is scalled to look "normal".
the cycles for Aspect ratios are:
NORMAL (will display 4:3 picture with black bands on sides)
ZOOM (magnifies the center section, good for letterbox and widescreen which display black bands on top and bottom)
FULL (displays picture at maximum size but with slight elongation),
JUST (will display 4:3 picture at it's maximum size but with aspect correction applied to the center of the screen so that elongation is only apparent at the left and right edges of the screen).
AUTO (will display any mix of signals at their maximum size automatically)
Note that this is a brief explaination of what the scaler does, and that it has many user adjustable options available via the remote and the on-screen menues (there are a ton of options, like, what would you think of having the entire wall of your listening room covered with plasma screens displaying one huge dazzling plasma picture? you can do that with this thing.
There's more. Depending on which input you use (it has every kind of input you can think of) and the quality of the input signal, you can do things that...well, I don't have time for that now...
Let's just say this: I'm getting 6 FREE High Definition 1080i signals from an 8 inch bowtie antenna I built myself from a coathanger and a piece of coax, that is literally lying flat on the roof of my house. Like, can anyone say SUPERBOWL PARTY AT PETE'S HOUSE! You wouldn't believe how good the signal is--the detail, the depth and complexity of the 17 million colors--I'm just staring at the picture and I have no idea what the show is...it's that good.
Yea, I've seen HD in the showrooms, but nothing prepaired me for what I'm seeing now.
