hi Hammer,
you might want to consider subscribing to a Home Theater mag.
I get two. The best, IMHO, are:
1) Stereophile's Guide to Home Theater (current issue is annual reccomended components)
2) Widescreen Review (for example, they recently did a 4 part review of subwoofers which was very, very good; the 4 magazines are available as a package deal, by calling the mag direct)
3) Curtco's Home Theater Magazine- this one just barely gets the nod, but it's cheap, and occasionally does good work, they went through a rough period, but i *think* they have finally gotten their act together.
If you have a good dealer in your area, that can be very helpful as he will have choosen gear that works well together, and can be a good source for the info that never makes the magazines (like, why has the sound stopped?) You have the right idea to take some time, and do the job right.
This home theater hobby is complicated, expensive, and easy to screw up.
