Re: Quality of DVD + projector

As was said, we need more information. Right now, the only thing that can beat a high quality CRT (9") with a good scaler and a DVD player is a 100K DILA type unit used in a commercial operation. As was posted, even a more modest Sony 50 unit (7" tubes) with a good doubler will beat everything else for picture quality (compared with 1 chip DLP or LCD's) esp. on the "true black" aspect of movies. I had a 2 chip DLP that I loved but gave it up and never looked back with a Sony 70 series (8" tubes) CRT projector.

Yes, you need professional installation and calibration.
Yes, it must be recalibrated every 4-6 months (if you don't mind some tweaking, you can do this yourself).
Yes, the tubes are really expensive to replace (about $1,200 or so once every 4-5 years depending on usage).
Yes, CRT's are big and obtrusive.
No, the picture can't be beaten.

It all comes down to what sacrifice you wish to make in terms of space, finances, and convenience.

Like it or not, the ancient CRT is still the king of the hill (for now).
