Recommendations for digital tuner/set-top box?

I have a Pioneer Elite PRO710HD but have not yet bought a digital tuner. The retailer advised me not to spend $2500 for Pioneer's current set-top box (I believe he is anticipating something that's better/cheaper) and steered me away from the cheap RCA box.
My primary HD source will be satellite feeds. The local stations may be too far away to receive digital signals adequately. I'm getting impatien to see HD pictures on this set so I want a tuner.
Is there something new to the market, or soon to arrive on the market, that represents better quality or a better deal than Pioneer's current digital tuner? Is there something like the RCA that is cheap?
