One Atom for center channel -- why or why not???

I keep hearing about timbre-matching and tonal consistency across all three front speakers. My entertainment center has just enough room for a single Paradigm Atom to run with my Atom mains -- would this work or not?
My theory about center channels runs like this: The designers knew the speaker height needed to be kept to a minimum so as not to take up too much space in a living room. And since a TV is wide, they knew they could make a wide speaker, so it made sense to use dual mid/bass units to increase power handling and bass response in compensation for the smallish drivers.
I know that the center channel works hard in a home theater set-up, but I've had my room shaking with Dave Matthew's "Under the Table and Dreaming" disc without even running the sub. Plus the viewing/listening area is only about 6' away from the TV & center channel speaker in a small 10x10 room. Any opinions would be appreciated, and anyone who wants to go in for a single Atom would be a hero -- I'll even buy 'n' ship . . .
