Tried an upgrade S cable but LD whites still washed out

Some weeks ago I queried if LD "whites" (via a Theta Data 3 = Pioneer) are inherently more washed out than direct broadcast or DVD (via a Toshiba).
One suggestion was to replace the s video cable. This has been done but the picture is still dull and washed out.
Any new suggestions, particularly from Pioneer Elite or Theta LD owners? Maybe the unit needs servicing?
