I am not sure how good the "effects" are, but our bedroom system has a Sony DVP-S530D which has something called Virtual Enhanced Surround. It has a couple of options (VES A and VES B) which are suppose to give you some rear channel effect while using only two front speakers. That's about as much as I am able to determine from the manual.
The S530D we have is about a year old, so it is quite likely that Sony has replaced it with a newer model.
