opinion on set-up

i am interested to hear what option people have found to be a better choice for listening to television broadcast (and vhs viewing) through home theater surround sound set-up.
which sounds better in your opinion:
-interconnect cables running from the audio output on the t.v. to the input on my receiver
OR
-interconnect cables running from my hi-fi vcr audio out to same input on the receiver
i was considering changing my current set-up but i dont want to have to pull everything apart unless it is necessary. right now i am using the second set up mentioned while leaving my vcr on all of the time.
i would also appreciate advice on what you think is a decent, reasonably priced interconnect (<1 meter needed) for this job. thanks in advance!
