reference dvd players...what's the deal?!!!

could someone explain to me what is so special about reference
dvd players. i see that they are generally 2-3 times the price of
standard dvd players and i was wondering if there is really a
difference. is the picture better? is the sound better? is this
marketing b.s.? i have not tested one out but maybe you can
save me a trip!! thanks!!!
