(1) The U.S is region one. Region 1 DVDs will only play on region one players unless you have a DVD player with the region thing defeated. I will bet money on it that your player doesn't have the region code defeated.(2) VCD are basically a CD with video. They are similiar to a DVD, but I believe the picture is not as good and they won't have DD/DTS soundtracks. Some DVD players will not play VCDs.
(3) PAL is the TV format in Europe. In the US our format TV is NTSC. Pal uses 25 frames per second were as NTSC uses 30 (color NTSC uses 29.97 FPS really). A NTSC will not play a PAL format disc and vice versa. Buy NTSC only if you live in the US or Canada. Buying a PAL DVD would be like throwing your money away.
All you have to do when looking around on Ebay for DVDs is buy a Region 1 DVD and you won't have any problems.
