What you could be experiencing is the MacroVision copy-protection on the DVD messing with the video levels. Many VCRs will not pass this signal, but some do.

The cheapest solution is to get yourself a RF Modulator from Radio Shack, about $30 for the mono version. With this box, you run the "F" coax out of the VCR and the RCA A/V out of the DVD into it and then "F" coax out to the TV. I've got one and my problems were instantly solved. The modulator worked great without any switching.
