Any differences between Satellite TV hardware?

I am planning on changing(and hopefully upgrading) from my cable tv service to satellite tv. Looking at doing either the DirectTV or DishTV set-ups. They both have rather attractive promo packages going now with free dish/recver./installation for a one year agreement.

My question is, are the different receivers all of similar quality in terms of reception? Both companies also sell numerous other upgraded receivers for substantial $. Are these just added bells & whistles?

I also see Sony, RCA and numerous other companies sell DSS hardware. Are these any better than the free sets with the Satellite providers?
