dumb question. 5.1 inputs and volume

63.224.80.121

Okay, dumb question time. Many receivers have 5.1 inputs for use with external decoders and/or future upgrades. Are these typically just straight pass-through to the amps, or do they go through a volume control stage? I would guess simply pass-through since 5/6 deck pots are more expensive than doing volume digitally in these units, but thought I'd check. (my potential interest is in playing around with some multi-channel dsp experiments, and some of these cheap receivers would provide a convenient 4/5 channel amp for this purpose. If I have to make an external volume control anyway, though, it's not worth the trouble.)
