Two options spring to mind:
1. Outlaw 1050 AV Receiver-$600.00
Atlantic Technology T70 system- $1000.00
Pioneer DV-C503- $350.00
Cables-$200.00
Speaker stands-$200.00
2. Used Pioneer Elite VSX-07TX Receiver- usually $600.00
Kef Cresta Center Channel/2 pairs of Cresta 3 floor standers
and 2 pair of Cresta 2 for surrounds- now $900.00 at
Audio Advisor
Entry level Sony DVD multi player- $400.00
Sound Dynamics RTS-800 Sub-$250.00
Cables/Stands-$400.00
The first system is probably better for movies than music, but the T70 system has gotten several good reviews and is more compact than option 2.
For option #2, no I do not work for Audio Advisor, but just got the new catalogue and there are some good deals. The Kef's do music very well.
