I'll chime in with my suggestion:
Onkyo 575X ($450)
5 NHT Super Ones ($650)
NHT Sub One ($600)
4 decent stands ($150)
entry level interconnects from a reputable manufacturer, and OFC 12 ga. speaker wire ($150)
so that leaves $500 for a DVD changer (sorry, I don't recommend changers and therefore have no suggestions)
This system is bargain priced and has excellent sound for both music and movies. Good luck!
